Claypath is one of the oldest and historic roads within the City of Durham. Since medieval times it was the main route for both pilgrims on their way to the cathedral and merchants selling their wares in the market place. The street was once very busy and lined with drinking houses, tradesmen and the workshops of artisans. However, since the construction of the bypass Claypath is perhaps now enjoying the quietest period in its long history.
